The Old Gray Lady Is Pretty Retro, Too

Kelley Polar and Metro Area got a mention in the New York Times this past weekend. Hurrah.

It’s Called Vinyl

Here is Paul Gold cutting the new Morgan Geist single in Brooklyn, NY. For the nerds, “LPI” means “lines per inch.” The cutting computer determines how many grooves per inch to cut based on the content (for example, during a break with no kick drums or bass, it cuts them closer together, meaning more lines per inch).

Playing in this clip is one of two Carl Craig remixes.

Out Next: Morgan Geist EP

“Detroit” will be the first single from Morgan Geist’s new album Double Night Time. The release, out early September digitally and shortly after on vinyl, will take the form of an EP with the album original plus two incredible Carl Craig remixes. The album hits mid-September to the start of October, depending on your territory. If you want a sneak preview you can hit up Pitchfork or The Fader for streaming tracks.

Awesome

We love Mantler. Watch and listen.

Intern wanted!

That’s right, our wonderful Environ intern has at last graduated from business school and is departing for the world of full-time.  We’re looking for a responsible, smart, Web-savvy person to help out here at Environ. It’s a non-paying position but we can work with your school to provide credit…plus free Environ stuff including all new releases, guest listing galore at all events we can get you into, and a general feeling of well-being. Contact us for more info if interested (consider finding our email address on this Web site your first test of Web-savvy-ness).

We’ll Miss You, Barry.

UPDATE: A Web site has been put up by Barry’s family at discobarry.com.

Barry Lederer (pictured above with Melba Moore) was found dead in his NYC apartment this past weekend.

I hadn’t spoken to Barry in a while and only emailed him last week after seeing a friend of his on the street. Barry was a very sweet man and I shall miss him very much. I’m indebted to Eli “Eli-173” Epstein for introducing us.

He was also a seminal figure in NYC’s rich disco history. Read more about him here.

Goodbye, Barry. Thanks for everything.

Kelley Polar Entropy Reigns Single

“Entropy Reigns” is the first single from Kelley Polar’s album I Need You to Hold On While the Sky Is Falling. Called “one of the best of the year so far” by Pitchfork and downloaded over 100,000 times during its week as a free Discovery Download on iTunes, we knew “Entropy Reigns” needed an incredible remix, so it was a simple decision to enlist Ewan Pearson and Al Usher (who also operate under the name Partial Arts) to work their magic. Not only did these two have a keen understanding of pop music, sweaty dancefloors and strings, but they were big fans of Kelley Polar, so they turned in two remixes instead of one: the more house- and tech-driven “Pearson and Usher’s Closed System Dub” and the more electro- and pop-fueled “Pearson and Usher’s Second Law Dynamix.” The 12″ is out today and available in our Store!

Much as we love vinyl, these remixes were so epic that we had to keep the bonus track for digital: an outstanding and innovative remix of “We Live in an Expanding Universe” from the mighty Caribou (formerly Manitoba). You can find the digital version of the EP (including the Caribou remix) on all digital music stores including iTunes.

Environ Bar Mitzvah Photos

Knishes from Knish Knosh in Queens? Check.

Inflatable synthesizers? Check.

Jewish maracas? Check.

As promised, we have a bunch of photos from the Environ Bar Mitzvah on March 1. You can find some more here from our man at moodmat.com, Matt MacQueen. For those of you who don’t speak New York City, a bar mitzvah is a Jewish celebration marking a boy’s passage into manhood. It coincides with the kid’s thirteenth birthday…and this was Environ’s thirteenth anniversary. Get it? Thanks to everyone who came out to it, as well as those who came to the rocking Environ parties in Amsterdam and Berlin!
